Meet Ryan
Interests
Ryan is an 8th grader from the Evanston area. He loves sports, especially football, and enjoys playing video games. In his free time, when he is not playing video games, Ryan listens to music, and watches the Eagles on TV. Challenges Ryan has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which causes him to have low upper body strength and mobility. Ryan has trouble staying focused, and dedicated to his physical therapy exercises because they are boring. This makes it more difficult for him to perform fine motor skill tasks, like using utensils and writing on a keyboard. In the future, Ryan hopes to be able to pull his pants up, fasten his shoes, and put on his backpack independently. |

Meeting Ryan
When we met Ryan, the first thing we did was watch him do his daily physical therapy exercises. We spoke to him and his therapist about what his goals are, and observed which tasks he was most engaged with, and which he was easily distracted from. We talked about his interests, and what he liked to do in his free time, so that we could better implement those activities into new exercises. |
Testing our Ideas
After reviewing what we learned from our first meeting with Ryan, our team did a large brainstorm. We discussed the ideas we had and came up with 3 mockup ideas: Darts Basketball Foosball Unfortunately, our foosball mockup was destroyed by the Chicago wind as we brought it to Ryan's school, but we were still able to learn a lot from testing |
